Multicentre trials powered by XNAT

XNAT is an advanced management system for research images. It uses multiple technologies to provide researchers with the tools they need to process data and view data. The ICR/RM XNAT Repository hosts large multicentre trials for a variety of organisations. In general, we do not hold the original copy of the data, which is retained at the sites where acquisition occurred. However, the Repository provides the canonical copy for the purposes of the trial. The “value-added” part of what we do is to:

  • manage anonymisation of data so they can be transferred safely from the NHS and other healthcare providers into the research workflow;
  • provide training for data uploaders;
  • create project-specific documentation;
  • curate the data and structure them into a resource that can easily be searched and accessed via the web by researchers;
  • manage access permissions, as instructed by trial sponsors, to ensure that the correct researchers have access to the correct data;
  • provide tools to annotate and enrich the data;
  • provide hardware (e.g., networked GPU access) and software (e.g., expertise in the XNAT API, containerisation, Java, Python) to facilitate processing of datasets on XNAT.
