And to the RMH press team. Our article in The Lancet Oncology attracted interest from across the globe. Here is the report back:
Hello all,
Please see below a round up of the coverage from the RADSARC-R trial, which was led by Professor Christina Messiou and supported by Royal Marsden Cancer Charity funding.
The results were published in The Lancet Oncology this week revealing that an AI algorithm developed by Royal Marsden and ICR researchers could be twice as accurate as a biopsy at grading the aggressiveness of some sarcomas. The study’s embargo coincided with the UK’s inaugural AI Safety Summit at Bletchley Park on 1 November, which increased interest in our story.
Overall, we achieved around 570 pieces of coverage. To publicise the results, we organised filming with Fergus Walsh, Medical Editor at the BBC, to produce content that appeared on BBC Breakfast, BBC News at One, BBC News Channel, BBC News World (which reaches over 200 countries and territories), BBC News online and on BBC Radio bulletins throughout the day including all local BBC stations, BBC Radio 2, BBC Radio 3, BBC Radio 4, BBC Radio 5Live and BBC World service. We also issued a press release leading to national coverage including the Guardian which mentioned the Charity funding, Daily Mirror, Daily Telegraph, Daily Mail (combined article space of national print coverage valued at £18.8K) as well as ITV and Independent online. Professor Messiou was interviewed live on BBC Radio 4’s Today programme (02:43), BBC 5Live (01:43) and LBC News (mentioning the Charity in all), and we also filmed a package in the hospital with 5 News for their 5 o’clock news. We posted a link to the BBC feature across our social channels which resulted in 195 click-throughs. Additionally the LinkedIn post received 250 engagements, we had 141 engagements on Facebook and 98 on Instagram.
As the story was picked up by the Press Association, it was covered widely by regional media including LBC news, Evening Standard, and Sutton Guardian online, which all mentioned The Royal Marsden Cancer Charity. Trade media such as Building Better Healthcare, Medical Xpress, Independent Nurse, TNW, Social Care Today, Pharma Times, Aunt Minnie, Biospace and National Health Executive also covered the story, as did international news media across the Middle East (e.g., the National, Mashable Middle East, Ad Dustour (0.9mil monthly visits), Aljadeed TV (0.88mil), Saudi Gazette (0.8mil), Independent Arabia), Europe (e.g, Ireland Live, EuroNews, Sloboden Pečat), Africa (Ghana Guardian), Australia/New Zealand (Radio New Zealand (6.9), Perth Now), North America (Yahoo Canada (1.5mil monthly visits)) and Asia (Yahoo Singapore (0.9mil), South Asia Global).
Professor Messiou will be interviewed by BBC Radio London on Monday 6 Nov.
